[Redacted] concluded the interview by stating that even though he does not consider Mr. Jobs to be a friend, he (Mr. Jobs) possesses the qualities to assume a high level political position. It was [redacted]’s opinion that honesty and integrity are not required qualities to hold such a position. — My favorite quote from the FBI files on Steve Jobs
Just released today: The FBI’s entire file on Steve Jobs
Interesting to note that the above photo comes from an extensive background check (including in-person interviews with those that knew him) due to the possibility of Jobs receiving a presidential appointment in the 90s.
Also included: documents (including his fingerprints) relating to a series of bomb threats aimed at Apple.

Not Everyone Copies Apple

aaplorchard:

“[Apple is] going to continue to make the best products in the world that delight our customers and make our employees incredibly proud of what they do.”

- Tim Cook in his first email to Apple employees as Apple’s new CEO sent August 25, 2011

“The path [Sony] must take is clear: to drive the growth of our core electronics businesses - primarily digital imaging, smart mobile and game; to turn around the television business; and to accelerate the innovation that enables us to create new business domains.”

- Kazuo Hirai in response to being appointed Sony’s new President and CEO on February 1, 2012

Apple: {best, world, delight, proud} vs. Sony: {growth, businesses, accelerate, domains}

Not everyone copies Apple.

In 2009, Apple sold more iPhones than it did in 2007 and 2008 combined.

In 2010, Apple sold more iPhones than it did in 2007, 2008, and 2009 combined.

Last year, Apple sold 93.1 million iPhones, slightly more than it did in in 2007, 2008, 2009, and 2010 combined.

In case you wanted a better illustration of what Apple’s crazy iPhone sales growth is like.

(via Takeaways from Apple’s (Q4) 2011)

Q: 4G and larger screens are growing in the market. Has popularity of larger screens on Android phones changed or impacted your view? And 4G, obviously some phones have battery life issues, but what do you think?
A: We just sold 37 million iPhones and could have sold more with the supply. There are a lot of people out there who like what we’re doing.

I love the response by Tim Cook when asked whether the iPhone should add larger screens or 4G compatibility now to compete better with Android, even though both have been shown to have large negative effects on battery life.

This guy badgered me about how Microsoft was going to completely change the world with this tablet PC software and eliminate all notebook computers, and Apple ought to license his Microsoft software. But he was doing the device all wrong. It had a stylus. As soon as you have a stylus, you’re dead. This dinner was like the tenth time he talked to me about it, and I was so sick of it that I came home and said, “Fuck this, let’s show him what a tablet can really be.

“Steve Jobs” by Walter Isaacson as quoted by Malcolm Gladwell for The New Yorker

“Fuck this, let’s show him what a tablet can really be.”

BozoCrack is a depressingly effective MD5 password hash cracker with almost zero CPU/GPU load. Instead of rainbow tables, dictionaries, or brute force, BozoCrack simply finds the plaintext password. Specifically, it googles the MD5 hash and hopes the plaintext appears somewhere on the first page of results.

It works way better than it ever should.

Clever idea to show just how vulnerable simple encryptions (those without a salt) can be (even when thinking about something like MD5).

His philosophy of aesthetics reminds me of a quote that went something like this: “Fashion is what seems beautiful now but looks ugly later; art can be ugly at first but it becomes beautiful later.”

Steve always aspired to make beautiful later.
