What happened to apprenticeship? I was thinking the other day that this is really what I’ve done. I didn’t go to college, but I’ve spent years learning from people around me who are much smarter and more experienced than I am. I’ve learned while actually doing stuff… why don’t we have apprenticeships anymore?

I have been saying this for a while.  When did this stop being about the work?  When did we stop appreciating trade work?  WTF?

Halfway through my degree program I came to this realization and the thought that maybe I’d be much further ahead if I hadn’t wasted my time at all with college.  I don’t feel like I’ve learned anything that I couldn’t have learned with real life experience and I don’t feel like it’s even going to be that much of a starting point for me in a career.  The only thing I can see it benefiting is maybe getting me into doors for interviews.  After that, it was pretty much a waste of five (yeah, it’s not really four anymore) years and a lot of money.
